The Helping Hands Project – Help Us, Help Others!

Introduction:

Poverty is a significant issue in the Philippines. It is impossible to stop or solve. Our country has a relatively high poverty rate, with more than 16% of the population living in poverty. There are people who cannot afford to work or earn an income to meet their basic needs. There is also inequality in wealth distribution, other sectors, and unmanaged populations. As a result, 17.6 million Filipinos are struggling with their everyday lives. When we go out, the most common thing we see that should not be common or should not happen at all are homeless people on the street, continuing to struggle with life's challenges and looking for hope that someday fate will lead them to a better way.

Poverty would not arise if there were no causes. According to the ADB 2009 report, some of the main causes of poverty are: (1) a lack of high inflation during crisis periods; (2) a failure to fully develop the agriculture sector; (3) a weakness in job creation and job quality; (4) high levels of population growth; (5) high and persistent levels of inequality (incomes and assets), which dampen the positive impacts of economic expansion; and (6) recurrent shocks and exposure to risks such as economic crisis, conflicts, natural disasters, and "environmental poverty." The key findings of the report also stated that the poor have large families with six or more members; many Filipino households remain vulnerable to shocks and risks; and the poor cannot afford education due to a lack of funds and sustainability.

Purpose:

The Helping Hands Project collects and distribute drives for people to donate their unwanted clothes, pre-loved personal items, and spare coins in order to reduce hunger and poverty in less fortunate communities in the Philippines, as well as to promote sustainability and well-being.

Description:

Poverty is widespread in our country which is why many people lack basic necessities. Many children are unable to attend school due to a lack of financial support. There are also cases where families live in remote areas where typhoons and other natural disasters strike unexpectedly. Fighting for their basic needs is extremely difficult, especially when they are affected or at risk. That is why the Helping Hands Project hopes to assist such people by holding feeding programs, medical missions, and providing basic necessities. They hold a garage sale and sell their own merchandise, clothing, and pins on social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram. Following their coin drive, they will visit poor communities and help people with their earned money and donations.

Support:

The Helping Hands Project is in collaboration with Thrive. They partnered with Thrive to volunteer with them for their feeding programs. Thrive connects global donors and local volunteers to school children living in the poorest areas of the world by providing nutritious food and promoting healthy habits to give them a chance at a better life. Aside from that, the Helping Hands Project also has a garage sale. The funds raised through all of it will be used for their subsequent feeding programs, medical missions and to provide other needed items to poor communities.
